The aftermath of "Rejection".........!!!!!!!!!!

Somebody has rightly said:

“Rejection is god’s way of saying- wrong direction.

Rejections are always bad, be it a placement, a coveted spot somewhere else or a relationship. It has that embedded nature of “destroying” you to the core, annihilating all that has been done before and leaving you in a befuddled land of “questions”. Questions which only you can answer, only you can solve better.

With first company taking the flow on the campus, handing job offers in abundance, I am coming across a lot of students who are feeling “dejected” because they were “rejected”. It is natural to feel that way, for if you are not feeling the scars, the mistakes would get repeated again and will leave you with a lot of scars in the end.

Well, the bigger question is: How to deal with it? How to handle the aftermath of a rejection?

Image result for rejection

Let’s not see it the way I want to see it, let’s look at the way it is. You were rejected; you were dejected for many reasons. You went into oblivion, and tore apart pieces in the process and did a post-mortem of it to come out with the best “excuse”.

Sorry, but many people find excuses to cover up their deficiencies and it indeed is a human nature.

You dig it deeper, in the process you slipped into peer-comparison, you felt jealous and a question loomed in your head: If it can be him or her, why not me? A drop of tear got converted into flurry of tears, you need consolation and you need motivation because you did worked very hard for it and somebody else ate the pie. The pie that you thought would be yours but ended up on being someone else’s.

Well, let me tell you, this is not the best method; the best method is to peacefully accept it and move on ahead for newer pursuits. Let’s not get stuck in the wheel of “over-analysis” and let the wheel move forward for a new destination.

Let’s chase something else, let’s trudge a new path, let’s enjoy a new journey……………………and destination will eventually arrive.

Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.”

How to get out of that "BAD" feeling........!!!!!!!!

The other day, someone (the identity of this someone should strictly be unknown) told me “I am disappointed. All my friends are getting placed and I am left behind. I am happy for them but feel bad for myself”. On the same evening, another someone (it was not the same someone, but still identity should be hidden) called me in a dejected voice and spoke about his nervousness behind not getting placed and how bad it feels when insecurity looms and opportunities dry quickly.

Their plight is quite understood and very natural as sentiments can go on a tortuous ride when you don’t know why it is happening? Why only you? And what is going so wrong that the treasure is still not achieved? It is very common to fall under the trap of those mood swings which germinates irritation, frustration and a deep insecurity.

Is it bad to feel “bad” about something? Is it unstoppable? Is it what gives you a true picture of what exactly needs to be done? I think, yes though it is bad to have those feelings it can’t be stopped easily, it still helps in getting a deeper knowledge of who you are. When going gets tough, then only you can understand your own potential because that is when the most crucial excitement of life comes into picture- the comebacks.

Years’ back, I was not able to find a spot in University Cricket team in which a lot of incompetent players were involved. I had made enough reputation into cricketing circle to find a place and I knew I had enough in me to prove myself, but I was rejected. I felt bad, angry and all sort of emotions ran over me. Then, one question popped in my mind. Is this the way it can be dealt? The answer was- No.

In further years’, I was fortunate to make a strong claim for myself in the side and we made it to the zonal finals after 22 years’ in University history. The rejection raged a fire of comeback in me which I eventually did and hence, those bad days and bad feelings made me more improved player. That’s how it goes or rather it should go.

But, if it is bad to have that deep feeling, why should not we avoid it and if we should, how can we avoid it? To be precise, if you want to avoid it- start looking forward. If you look backwards’, all the failures will haunt you, if you look side wards-all your selected friends will aggravate the matters but if you look forward- there is a well of opportunities lying which can make you more successful than your peers.

A strong support system helps a lot in these period of “bad” feelings where comparison, competency, ability etc. takes the better of you. I expect you to have built enough goodwill to have at least two close friends’ beside you who can help you in getting out of this. That’s how I am getting out of the phase I am into right now. Two of my coincidental friends have proved to be a bulwark for me and that is when you begin to feel good and that adrenaline of performing comes back.

Last question- Is it the first time that you are encountering this? Have you never had those short tenure of “bad” feeling in your whole lifetime? I strongly suppose most of you had brief periods of frustration, insecurity, peer comparison etc. and still you are smiling which means you have conquered them easily. So, why not now? Why brood over the same questions which are unanswered and which will worsen the situation? Why not look forward and explore sea of available opportunities- both inside and outside.

To suffice the post, this word of mine can guide you a bit it’s only you who are the sole actor in your whole life and hence, the choice lies with you- whether to stay with that feeling or move forward for a better cause.

ALL THE BEST for the choice you make…….!!!!!!!!!!!!

7 ways to deal with a rejection........!!!!!!!

Image result for rejections

LIFE@IMS and it’s a season of mixed emotions. At one side, you will enjoy your success by getting a dip in that holy “kund” with a pomp, on the other side, you might feel bad for the rejection of your closest accomplice. But this is a season of epic comebacks too. It’s a season where men are separated from boys as mere boys choose to scratch their heads to know the reason behind their rejection while men choose the other way.

A lot of students I talk to these days feel quizzical about the exit, they feel irritated and a sadness prevails in their emotions. So, how to deal with those early round exits and come back stronger. Here are few ways:

1.       Keep Preparing and you never know when your day might come:There was a time when two of my acquaintances were not getting their profiles selected though we, or rather they, were preparing hard. It was very confusing and disappointing too. But, around all this, they never left their preparations at bay. They kept improvising their knowledge and skill base, practiced hard, looked into their resume and eventually got selected with the highest package.

“Hence, it’s just that some days are not made for you while some days are only made for you”

That someday will soon come, just prepare and prepare hard.

2.       Stop Contemplating: This might be extremely irritating to face early round exits and it naturally is when stakes are high. But never go into the mode of deep contemplation for that. There is a huge difference between assessment and contemplation. Do assess your performance and where it could have been improved but don’t contemplate on recurrent questions like: Why me? When? How? Till then? Am I eligible enough to crack any of them? What if I don’t make it?

3.       Move on As soon as possible: This might be easier said than done but if you analyze the choices you have after a rejection, either you can hang around and worsen the situation or you can move on and start afresh for the next opportunity. This is the principle on which life works, so why not apply it here. It’s just a process.

4.       Celebrate others’ success: There was this guy who was facing constant denials from every recruiter but always celebrated his peers’ success. For him, the selection came late but he never refrained himself from celebrating others’ success. Congratulate them, meet them, talk to them, and share some moments of happiness with them. There is some spiritual connection which is inherent in doing this. Believe me, it works and it work wonders.

5.       Victory lies in making comebacks: There is a different glory in making come backs. The happiness is much more than getting it on the first go. A rejection can either kill your enthusiasm or it can pump you to do better next time. Choice is yours, decide early and come victorious.

6.       Be relaxed because this is not the end of the road: There is nothing to worry if you are not making it. There are loopholes to be corrected but that does not mean that you are worse kind of student a recruiter would come across. Just relax, have some good time, have some fun and things will be back on track soon. Take it easy.

7.       Believe in yourself: I love this dialogue from the movie “Pursuit of happiness” which says: “Never let anyone say that you can’t do it. If you think you can do it, you can” Believe in yourself, take up the challenge and try not to crumble under circumstances. Accept everything with a big heart, never crib about anything and be patient enough to come across a good offer.

Well, the rejections you are facing right now is just a beginning of a long, arduous and challenging journey, it’s not the end of it. There are lot more colors to be filled in the canvas.

Just chill………..without paying its bill………!!!!!!!!!! And don’t forget to prepare hard.

Good's and Bad's of my LIFE@IMS..........!!!!!!!!!

When I began my MBA, I had only one goal in my mind- to be better than my former self. Having worked with L&T in the past, my own assessment revealed loopholes, I was still unaware of a lot of things and there was a huge scope of improvement in my personal, professional and academic front.
As I look back those two years’ I figure out that I was able to utilize all the resources, I was able to do things which others thought off as futile and though everything was going around back home, I did a fair job in the course at the place I was in. Yes, there was lot left that I would have done but the time reveals the reality much better than anything else. Today, when I dwell into those memories, I figured out few good and bad things that I did in that period of two years. Let’s start with the GOOD ones:

1.       Participated: Yes, I did that at the best of my capabilities given the time I had. I did almost everything that came my way and had the scope of improvement in me. I sang, I wrote, I presented, I volunteered, and I played and tried hard to build a resume with a lot of extra-curricular. Though my area of expertise was cricket in which I played for University, I tried hands on a lot of things in those two years. And everything I did was not for certificates.

2.        Tried for a company which others’ thought unachievable: Yes, when S&P Capital IQ visited the campus and I asked the reason behind people not applying for the company, the answer was astonishing. They thought they don’t had enough to crack that company. Though I too was rejected, that stint of preparation did two very good things in me- first, I became confident because I competed with good colleges from India and two, I covered up for the lack of technical knowledge I had in initial semesters.

3.       Had a good set of friends: I was never friend zoned and I never had the friends who would post those fluffy status on Facebook citing me as their sole best friend. But, I had good set of people around me from whom I learned few important qualities of their behavior. I would not name them but yes, every one of them added something in me.

4.       Utilized the faculties: There was a time when I had two choices to make- rather crib about where I was or to utilize whatever I had in my hand. I chose the latter one and it impacted me in the most profound way. I consulted teachers, talked to them on various walks of my life and today when I look back at those years, I can surely say that I improvised because of their mentoring and help.

5.       Helped others’: Once I was selected for campus, I extended my support to a lot of people. I was always interested in talking to juniors on their problems, I was always interested in improvising resume of my classmates and was always eager to contribute in any way I can for their success. And all this I did was for a reason- for gaining experiences and it really gave me some eye-opening experiences.
That’s enough of the boasting……..Let’s go on the other side of the table, the BAD’s:

1.       Poor Networking: Yes, I was poor in networking which I realized afterwards. This may be a result of my own reluctance to not remember people’s name and their credentials or the ignorance of the importance of building netoworks. This is something which aspiring people should do. Build strong networks and you may find a business partner there on.

2.       Trying a business: Nowadays, the most sought advice that I give to students who are placed is to fulfill their own ambitions of entrepreneurship, if any. There is a job security, you have an idea, go and try it. The last thing that will happen is that you will fail and nothing more than that. For budding managers, try it if you have something. There is nothing such as right time for it.

3.       Taking up a responsibility: There was this guy in our class who was so good in taking responsibilities and I always desired for that. I never tried hands into organizing which kept me aloof of responsibilities. Reasons might be many but the truth is that I never willingly went for it.

4.       Technical Know-how: Looking back, I shamelessly wasted first two semesters waiting for things to turn up in my favor. But, that’s not how life goes. Today, there is lot to learn in less time. There are people who are better than you technically which ironically hampers your prospects. Having a major in finance, I still lack a lot of basic knowledge about several things and I am trying to cover that up now.

5.       Utilizing the resources: There was a lot to be utilized. I was interested in research, there are research papers in library but I never looked at them. There were teachers who motivated students for research but after a lot of backing and efforts, I was not able to do so. I never went to the Computer Library, never had the credentials for IT Center and never get into things like Hyurisko, Spandan and other events which would have given me varied experiences.
And the LIFE@IMS ended for me...........but for you it has just begun........!!!!!!!!! Go and give it a try.........

What a BELIT TEST is all about.....!!!!!!!

Its only slightly more than three weeks remaining when Deloitte would be conducting their hiring process for the campus aspirants and the process, which seems to be an arduous one, is an arduous one in a sense that it tests you a lot on communication parameters. The tweak, however, this year is students clearing first three levels will have no time to prepare for the interview as they are scheduled the very next day.

Coming to the point, BELIT Test is a 30 min test to check your listening and comprehension skills. The level of the test is not very high and a bit concentration and careful listening will do the trick for a candidate with average listening skills.

I can not recollect everything about the test but I can share few points as to how test would be and what type of questions it will have.

TYPE 1: Listening to a conversation of 5 or more seconds. Memorizing the narratives, listening the question and the options and marking the right answer. Don't ever try to note down the details as the conversation or the options (either of both, can't recollect) can be heard twice. Pay attention to the details. Conversation would be very straight-forward and will not pose great challenge in terms of understanding the details.

But, listen to the options carefully and mark your answer with full surety as an answer once marked can't be reached again. Simple tip: Carry good earphones, don't peer into what the person sitting next to you is doing and listen attentively. Its all about doing the basics right.

TYPE 2: Audio/ visual comprehension. In this type of questions, you would be shown a picture and the questions would be based on that picture. Again, the options will be recited and correct option needs to be selected after listening to each one of them. A sample example can be:

Image result for man on his office desk

Here, the question can be: " What is the man in the picture doing?"

The answer is easy but options would be narrated. So, pay attention.

TYPE 3: Simple Comprehension. This is just like a normal reading comprehension. A passage would be given to you with few questions in it. Straight forward questions and in between the passage, the lines would be marked with yellow for which you will have questions relating to its meaning. This section will have questions on comprehension and vocabulary. Read as much as you can, practice a bit and it would be an easy bet.

TIPS:

1. What if you don't have good vocabulary? No problem. It would be easily manageable. Be average on it and you can be through.
2. Stay aloof from others till the time you are taking the test. No matter how good friends you are, stay focused.
3. Carry a good set of earphones.
4. The accent of the speaker would be very simple. Just pay attention.
5. Don't even attempt to jot down the points. The test would pass like a blink of your eye.
6. Listen to audios of personalities to get a touch of the alien accent.
7. In visuals, pay attention to every details. The questions might be on a minute activity in the picture.
8. Don't panic if something goes wrong. Everything happens for a good reason.
9. They usually give people a second chance who are nearby the cutoff score. Don't wait for the second chance as first attempt is the best attempt.
10. Last but not the least, they would be there to select you and not reject you. I hope it sums up the story.

Keep going. Practice and practice more. In case of any help, feel free to reach out to me.

6 things you should know being an MBA...........!!!!!!!!!

Image result for MBA
As you head start your career to a whole new avenue, there might be questions looming in your head as to how should we proceed, how we should do this and that. There are engineers who will have to mold their minds to accommodate the numbers, there are commerce graduates who will have to take their understanding to the next level.
But before that, here are few things that an aspiring MBA show know:
1. Get your Basics right: Have you ever thought why a pizza tastes so good? Why is it so crispy and crushes your tongue when you gallop in the pieces? It is not so because of the toppings but because of the base of the pizza. A well-cooked base serves best with any toppings.

Hone your basic accounting skills, get an idea of how stock markets work, how monetary policy brings changes into the economy. You need not to have an expert for that if you have a google. Go and explore the world of finance. Get your basics right, rest will take care of itself.
 2. Learn to make good Presentations: You will have an opportunity to make a lot of presentations which might seem meaningless to you but in the long run, corporate world relies a lot on this skills. Prepare your own presentations, concise, sober and to the point. Don't just dump in slides from slide share and present it in a nerdy way. This is time to practice and hone your presentation skills.

3. Improve your soft skills:  In today's era, how you speak does matter a lot than how much you speak. Management is all about managing people. resources etc. which is inter-woven and to get things right, soft-skills are must. Grab every opportunity to participate, to develop your leadership skills, to work in a team. Raise your standards, be someone who can be a good team player as well as a good leader with effective communication skills. It will help.

4. Build your resume: Give up your old habits, explore the opportunities and build a strong resume. There are ample avenues available for people who seriously want to do something rather than a prototype MBA. Do courses outside the campus, learn excel ,gain the knowledge, spend time on internet looking for basic concepts. At the end of two years, you might have less pictures of memories with your friends but you should have more achievements and certifications with ample knowledge.
Image result for RESUME BUILDING

5. Marks is a myth: Don't run for marks at all. Nobody would be giving a shit to your credentials if you don't have the skills required to complete a job. Maintain average pointers but be ahead on other counts. Again, raise your bar of thinking and do something which actually adds to your quality. Baki sab moh mayaa h...........
Image result for MARKS IN EXAM

6. The job scenario is grim: There are enough well-qualified MBA's in the market to accommodate the needs of employers. You won't be taking strategic decisions of a company, analyzing next shift of a company or giving the best advice to the top management. And therefore, focus more on skills rather than academic achievements. To excel, there is a greater need to stand apart from others to get a good job. Understand this as soon as possible.
Last but not the least, be away from petty people, maintain a good company, develop good relations with everybody, build strong networks, be in constant touch with your seniors, take their help and have a vision which is grand and big. Be better than your former selves for that is why you are here.
"And remember, you are the average of five people you meet daily. Take a great care of who those five people are........."
